The Cannoli Fund was awarded a King William Association<\/a> grant to help fund its Community Cat Carpool<\/a> program in the neighborhood. The grant provided for two more humane cat traps and will pay for the spay or neuter and vaccination of 34 King William cats. This will further our mission to stabilize the outdoor cat population in King William.<\/p>\n

TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return)<\/a> is the most effective and humane way to control cat populations.\u00a0The City of San Antonio promotes Trap-Neuter-Return<\/a> for the management of community cats. The Community Cat Carpool (CCC) program began when residents, interested in having their outdoor cats fixed, lacked a vehicle or the time to get to and from a low-cost clinic. The CCC’s “catmobile” picks up humanely-trapped cats<\/a> from across the neighborhood early in the morning. The cats are taken to a low cost clinic where they are spayed or neutered and vaccinated. The very top of each cat’s left ear is removed, or tipped, to mark it as sterilized. At the end of the day the cats are brought back to their colonies. The cats then live out their lives unable to reproduce. Some problem behaviors are also controlled: yowling at night and cat fights stop. This program has become so popular that the CCC now shuttles groups of up to six cats to a clinic on a regular basis.<\/p>\n
