La Cocina de Cannoli Provides 4,658 Pounds of Pet Food to Date

Hundreds of pounds of pet food are delivered each month.

La Cocina de Cannoli, or Cannoli’s Kitchen, provides pet food to residents in our service area to help feed their cats and dogs.

As of February 2016, The Cannoli Fund has contributed 4,658 pounds of cat and dog food to King William and Lavaca neighbors since the program began. Every month one of our board members delivers several hundred pounds of food to 11 animal-loving households within our one-square-mile service area.

Most neighbors participating care for feral cat colonies, although some dogs also benefit. Often animal caregivers are on a limited income, are elderly, or are disabled. Prior to the start of this program, some big-hearted neighbors were putting their own needs aside in order to feed their animals. We provide pet food to those caring for cats and dogs only after the animals are fixed and are no longer able to reproduce. Many of the pets fed participated in our Spay/Neuter Reimbursement or Community Cat Carpool programs.

The Cannoli Fund understands the financial commitment that comes with feeding a companion animal or a feral cat colony. This program depends primarily on contributions from our community and from our donors. If you, or a neighbor in our service area, would like to be part of our La Cocina de Cannoli program, or would like help fixing pets, please email us through our contact page.

We appreciate your help to spread information about this program to neighbors who may not be online.

A Milestone: The Cannoli Fund reaches 300+ animals helped to date

UPDATE 12/15/2014: 321 unduplicated animals have now received services from The Cannoli Fund!

We are happy to report that as of November 1, 2014, The Cannoli Fund, whose programs began in June 2011, has provided services to 302 unduplicated animals! Each of these animals lived or was rescued in the King William and Lavaca districts of San Antonio. The vast majority benefited from our spay/neuter reimbursement program or participated in our community cat carpool, in which a volunteer drives groups of feral cats to area low-cost clinics to be spayed or neutered. Many cats and dogs also received crucial medical care thanks, in part, to our Cannolicare program. These animals’ lives are not only greatly improved thanks to The Cannoli Fund, but they are also no longer able to reproduce and add more unwanted animals to our neighborhoods. This video showcases just a tiny fraction of the cats and dogs we’ve helped.

We couldn’t have done this without the support of The Cannoli Fund’s friends, neighbors, area businesses, board members, volunteers, and donors! Many thank yous from The Cannoli Fund and the cats and dogs served.

The Cannoli Fund Receives King William Association Grant

The Cannoli Fund recently received a grant from the King William Association (KWA) to help fund its Community Cat Carpool program in the King William Historic District.

This program assists area residents in trapping and transporting feral, also known as community cats, to low-cost clinics where they are fixed and vaccinated, and then returned to the site where they were trapped. The practice of TNR (trap-neuter-return) is widely agreed to be the most humane and effective way to control and assure the health of stray or feral cat populations. After a cat is fixed, the very top of its left ear is removed, or tipped, to mark it as sterilized.

The grant from the KWA allowed our organization to purchase four additional humane traps, and will pay for spay or neuter and vaccination of approximately 22 cats trapped in King William. The KWA grant helps The Cannoli Fund meet our internal goal of providing spay/neuter services to 100 cats in the two neighborhoods in our service area during our calendar year. If you know of cats needing this service in the neighborhood, please send an email via our contact page.

Earlier this year, The Cannoli Fund received a grant from The San Antonio Area Foundation to support the Cannolicare program which provides financial assistance for medical care necessary to save,  or dramatically improve the quality of life of, King William and Lavaca cats and dogs.

Community Cat Spay/Neuter Grant Funding Update

feral cat in king williamThe Cannoli Fund has some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that the Best Friends Animal Society and PetSmart Charities grant that provided FREE spay/neuter services and inoculations for feral cats in 14 San Antonio zip codes, including 78210, which includes Lavaca and a portion of King William, has been extremely successful!

The bad news is that it has been so successful that Year One funds have been depleted in only seven months.

Therefore, the free services have been suspended pending receiving Year Two funding. Funding is scheduled to resume in April 2013, but local Best Friends coordinator Bethany Heins has indicated that there is a request to have Year Two funds begin sooner. The Cannoli Fund will post updates on the status of this grant’s funding.

Meanwhile, The Cannoli Fund will continue to reimburse residents of King William and Lavaca for spay or neuter surgeries for dogs and cats, plus rabies shots, according to our reimbursement rates. The Community Cat Carpool will also remain active for residents trapping community cats in King William and Lavaca.

King William Community Cat

The Cannoli Fund’s Community Cat Carpool Takes Off

Are there feral or community cats at or near your house that you–or your neighbors–would like to have fixed, but you lack the time or the means to transport them? Do you live in the King William or Lavaca neighborhoods of San Antonio? The Cannoli Fund’s Community Cat Carpool can help.

These six cats from participated in the King William and Lavaca neighborhood Community Cat Carpool in October 2012.

You may have heard about The Cannoli Fund’s spay/neuter reimbursement program and want to take part. However, some may not have transportation or may not be able to take or pick-up the cats at the times required by the service providers.

That’s where the Community Cat Carpool comes in. We make appointments and shuttle King William and Lavaca community cats via our catmobile to and/or from the spay/neuter clinics! Just let us know where there are cats in need. It takes a neighborhood to control the outdoor cat population! T-N-R (Trap, Neuter, Return) works!

For more information on borrowing traps or assistance with transportation, email the Cannoli Fund.
