Although there’s a lot of wildlife in our service area, we’re not really adding spay/neuter services for them!

This adorable guy got himself trapped in one of our humane traps. These traps are great as we just flipped it over, the door fell open, and he went on his way.

2017 Fiesta Medals

Our cat and dog 2017 Fiesta medals are here!

2017 Fiesta MedalsOur 2017 Fiesta medals, featuring Auggie the dog and Franklin the cat, can be purchased now in The Cannoli Fund’s Fiesta medal shop and on eBay. Each medal proclaims “Spay or Neuter Pets,” the central mission of our nonprofit serving the cats and dogs of King William and Lavaca.

The star of this year’s dog medal is Auggie, a bull terrier/Amstaff mix, found in terrible condition in King William last summer. Although young, Auggie had multiple health problems, including a terrible case of mange, heartworm disease, and a large lump above his tail. Our Cannolicare and spay/neuter reimbursement programs covered Auggie’s months of veterinary care. Auggie’s foster mom has taken him to all of his vet appointments. She’s slowly nursed him back to health, showing Auggie the love, attention, and care he, and all dogs, deserve. Watch this website for Auggie’s full story with photos, coming soon.

2017 marks the first year a kitten has starred on our cat Fiesta medal. Franklin, a light orange and white kitten, was found alone on the street. Quickly scooped up by a neighbor, the kitten went to the vet to be checked out. He was fostered for only a few hours by one of our board members, then Franklin’s rescuers decided they couldn’t live without him. They came and picked him up from his foster and took him home to join their family. Franklin has lived in the lap of luxury, along with two dog siblings, ever since! Learn more about Franklin over the coming weeks.

Each medal costs $10. Preorder now in our 2017 Fiesta Medal shop or on eBay. Purchase now at Pig Liquors (Just moved to 519 S. Presa), The King William Association office (122 Madison Street),

King William Association Grant

KWA grant will change lives of area cats

King William Association Grant
Born outdoors, Blue Eyes, Carrot and their feral mother carpooled to be fixed.

The Cannoli Fund was awarded a King William Association grant to help fund its Community Cat Carpool program in the neighborhood. The grant provided for two more humane cat traps and will pay for the spay or neuter and vaccination of 34 King William cats. This will further our mission to stabilize the outdoor cat population in King William.

TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) is the most effective and humane way to control cat populations. The City of San Antonio promotes Trap-Neuter-Return for the management of community cats. The Community Cat Carpool (CCC) program began when residents, interested in having their outdoor cats fixed, lacked a vehicle or the time to get to and from a low-cost clinic. The CCC’s “catmobile” picks up humanely-trapped cats from across the neighborhood early in the morning. The cats are taken to a low cost clinic where they are spayed or neutered and vaccinated. The very top of each cat’s left ear is removed, or tipped, to mark it as sterilized. At the end of the day the cats are brought back to their colonies. The cats then live out their lives unable to reproduce. Some problem behaviors are also controlled: yowling at night and cat fights stop. This program has become so popular that the CCC now shuttles groups of up to six cats to a clinic on a regular basis.

If you know of cats needing this free service in the neighborhood, please send an email via our contact page.

Crofton, from southtown stray dog to 2016 dog Fiesta medal model

Crofton: Neglected Dog, Dumped in King William, to Pampered Pet [video]

Crofton’s story starts on August 31, 2015, the day he was found, in terrible condition, at Constance-Crofton Park in King William. The miniature poodle mix was cowering behind a trash can, filthy, covered in heavy mats embedded with burrs, fleas and ticks, dejected and alone. A wonderful King William family (who are serial dog-rescuers) on a walk saw him and knew he needed help. He had no collar and no microchip. After food, water, four baths, and a three hours of grooming from the two girls in the family and neighbors, he started to look and feel much better.  A week later, with help from The Cannoli Fund’s programs, Crofton was neutered, fully vaccinated, and vetted. He was pronounced healthy and about a year and a half old. Under all the dirt and matted fur was a dog who a few days later revealed he was a young, and very energetic, pup! His natural personality is best described as “exuberant.” Crofton now enjoys a life inside with two large rescue dogs who tolerate his antics, daily walks, lots of playtime, and a stay-at-home mom. And to top it off, he was selected for a star turn as this year’s Cannoli Fund Fiesta medal model! If you haven’t picked up his medal yet, visit our Fiesta Medal Shop! All proceeds go to fund our programs for King William and Lavaca cats and dogs in need.

Dog Spay/Neuter Reimbursement Rates Increased

san antonio spay neuter reimbursement program nonprofit
Rescue a cute puppy or a purebred dog through a south Texas rescue or shelter and save a life.

The Cannoli Fund, serving the King William and Lavaca neighborhoods, has seen an increased need for the use of private veterinarians for dog spay and neuter surgeries. The wait time for a pet spay/neuter at the low cost spay/neuter clinics have become longer. This is most likely due to an increased need and a decreased number of clinics. Often it is not possible to get an appointment to fix a dog for several weeks!

Maximum reimbursement for neutering of a male dog is now $180 and for spaying a female dog is $200. This is an increase of $80 per dog. The details are on the spay/neuter reimbursement program page of this website.

Spay/Neuter is The Cannoli Fund’s central mission. It is the most humane way to control pet populations and to reduce needless suffering. We are able to increase these rates thanks to our volunteers and donors.

Our sixth annual cat and dog Fiesta medals help us raise funds while spreading the important “Spay or Neuter Pets” message. See and buy this year’s medals at our 2016 Fiesta Medal shop or at Southtown businesses, Pin Pandemonium at Fiesta Fiesta at Alamo Plaza (April 14) and The King William Fair‘s Ilse’s Attic Fair Merchandise Booth (Saturday, April 23). Check this website or our Facebook page for details about when medals will hit neighborhood stores for in-person purchase.

The Cannoli Fund's 2016 Fiesta San Antonio Medals cat and dog

Our cat and dog 2016 Fiesta medals have arrived!

2016 fiesta medalsOur sixth annual cat and dog 2016 Fiesta medals are now available in our medal shop. Each medal proclaims “Spay or Neuter Pets,” which is the central mission of our all-volunteer nonprofit organization.

The star of this year’s dog medal is Crofton, a miniature poodle mix. Late last summer, a family found this small dog dejected and alone, hiding behind a trash can at Constance-Crofton Pocket Park. Clearly neglected for many months, he was filthy, flea- and tick-ridden, his fur heavily matted with burrs. He had no tags and no microchip. A handful of neighbors spent three hours bathing him (four times!) and cutting off all of the mats. After vet care and neutering with help from The Cannoli Fund, Crofton has blossomed into a loving and energetic companion in his adopted home. Look out for an article on each one of our medal models featuring “before and after” photos coming soon to this website!

The cat 2016 Fiesta medals features a gray tabby affectionately named Screwy, a resident of an established colony of community cats in Lavaca. Screwy is the most outgoing member of the group, and is very demanding when it’s time to eat! Note the top of his left ear has been “tipped,” to indicate he has been fixed and vaccinated. The Cannoli Fund worked with the colony’s caretaker to TNR — trap, neuter/spay, (and vaccinate), and return—these cats. The Fund now also provides their caretaker with supplemental cat food via our La Cocina de Cannoli, or Cannoli’s Kitchen, program.

Each medal costs $8 and can be ordered now in our 2016 Fiesta Medal shop and via thecannolifund on eBay. Medals can be purchased in person after April 2 at: Clothesline Cleaners (1006 S. St. Mary’s)
- The King William Association office (122 Madison Street)
- Pig Liquors (712 S. St. Mary’s)
- Villa Finale Museum and Gardens (401 King William Street)
- Lucy’s Doggy Daycare and Spa’s downtown location (937 S. Laredo). We’ll be selling the medals at Pin Pandemonium at Fiesta Fiesta at Alamo Plaza on April 14 and at the King William Fair on April 23, Ilse’s Attic booth by King William Park

All proceeds from the sale of these medals support our all-volunteer nonprofit organization that benefits animals in the King William and Lavaca neighborhoods.
